Beep...beep...beep. The sound of a heart monitor continued along it's steady, eerie pace. The room was so white, blank; nothing interesting about it other then the many machines. There lay, in the small bed, a young man with hair of black and eyes of gold. His body was scattered with cuts, scrapes, and gashes. The fight had been brutal, but he wanted it that way. He wanted it to end his misery, to...take him away from this place. This, however, was not what he wanted. To lay in pain, wasting away to nothing. Blood caked his handsome face and muscular arms. So much blood...it was a horrible sight that could make anyone queasy. His hair was messier then usual, much much messier. You could not see his golden eyes for they were hidden beneath heavy, tired lids. He did not move, not even twitch or show any sign of life other then the soft rise and up-rise of his chest. To see someone so still and virtually lifeless could wipe the smile from anyone's face.
Beep...beep...beep went the steady pace of the heart monitor. There was still some life left in Shade, but he didn't mind if it faded away. He no longer had his purpose anymore, he couldn't fight any longer...could no longer provide them with their sick enjoyment. He was nothing but skin and bones now. Worthless, yes nothing but a waste of air he was. It would be for the best if he just was gone. No one would miss him, no one at all. With death, your debts are payed for. And in death, your suffering ends...

Maia was practically running down the hall, ruby eyes worried to death. She shouldn't have left him so soon, shouldn't have let him face the fight alone. But he had his sister. Where was his sister in all of this? she thought, taking a sharp right turn around a corner, almost running into the wall. Maybe he didn't get my letter or flowers. Or maybe he just didn't get the meanings of them. Dammit, I should have written that down....
"Maia, slow down!" exclaimed the spirit of her brother. If he isn't breathing, you could always kiss 'im and see if he wakes up. Y'know, just like Sleeping Beauty. It could work." Maia glared over at her younger brother, wishing she could hit him at that moment. As if reading her mind, he moved closer to the wall as he floated with his back toward the ground and hands under his head.
"Don't say that, Benny," she bit out quite loudly as she rounded the door to the infirmary. "He isn't dead. Don't ever say that." She threw the doors open, yet she didn't take a step in. Maia despised this place ever since she had come here. This was the place she had spent her first month here, healing from the first experiment they tried on her. She scanned the room with her ruby eyes until she found the only occupied bed in the room. Taking a deep breath, she moved into the room and headed toward it, only to stop a couple of steps away.
What if he doesn't want to see me? What if he hates me for leaving? If that's the case, then my being here would only hurt him more than he probably already is.... she thought, taking a step back. She felt a chill on her back and knew Benny was urging her forward, to at least look at him. And she did. Maia took the few remaining steps closer to the bed, her heart about to leap into her throat and choke her.
As soon as her eyes landed on Shade, she gasped and turned away, tears burning her eyes. No no no no no!!! she thought, crouching close to the ground with her hands holding her head. He can't be dead. He doesn't look like he's fighting for life like he should. What should I do? I can't do a damn thing!! Shaking her head, she took several deep breaths and stood, turning back around to face Shade. Slowly, she moved toward a chair sitting against a wall in the small private, compact space. Once in it, she raised her hand shakily toward him, rested it gently on his left arm as the thought of him rejecting her presence there shot through her mind. Oh well... I can't blame him..

His arm twitched ever-so-slightly when she had touched him. It was basically a sign in telling her that he was still alive. Shade was more in a coma-like state. His mind was alive and thinking, but he could not open his mouth to speak. The only movement he could manage was the tiny twitching of his hand and arm; nothing else. His hand twitched again, desperately trying to show her he was alive. 'Maia...but why? Why are you here?' he thought wishing she could hear him, 'Have you come to watch me waste away?'.
Shade's arm and hand continued twitching as he thought. 'I...don't understand...you left, but now...you're back. Oh...I'm left with nothing but questions to ask. Will I ever get an answer? Or am I to die un-knowing? Please I wish to know, just give me a reason...I just want to know why you came back. You said you left because you couldn't be a good friend...so have you to returned to just laugh at my state? To just laugh...and tell me i shouldn't have gone to fight? I'm sorry Maia, but I needed to fight...I needed to have a purpose. Heh...well look at me now. I guess that wasn't a good idea huh? Ah well...it'll be over soon. Maybe if I see your brother I could tell him you said hi or something? Could you tell Adriana I'll miss her and that I wish I could have stayed with her? Thanks, I'm...not sure how much longer it'll be. Who knows....hopefully it'll be soon...'.

Tears ran unchecked down Maia's face as he responded to her physical touch. Everything she was feeling at the moment was welling up in her, ready to burst out and make her confess everything. She gritted her teeth, tried to force everything back and take it calmly, but it overwhelmed her. Maia threw her arms over his chest, her head resting on top of them as sobs shook her body in grief. "Shade, I'm so sorry. Please, don't let go. You aren't ready to go. You have to help your sister, still. You can't leave her here alone. She'll end up like me, like how I was before I met you. You can't die, Shade. You just can't leave me here alone after you've changed me so much," she confessed, not even knowing if he could hear her. For all she knew, the response of his arm could have been a good-bye. "Please... I couldn't help Benny, but I know I can help you. Just hold on for a little while longer, I swear to you I'll be here."

Shade's eyelids twitched slightly then opened just a little so you could barely see part of his golden eyes. "Maia...." he said in nothing, but a whisper. It was all he could manage as the coma started to slip away. "I'm...here...". He was trying so hard to speak louder so that she could hear him, trying so hard to get his strength back. His arm moved weakly and he stroked her azure hair. "I'm...here..." he said again voice slightly louder then before, "Please....don't cry...dry those pretty...eyes...". Shade's eyes opened more almost daring to let a few tears slip, but he didn't...never would he cry. "I won't.....leave...I'll stay."

Maia's sobs subsided lightly when he spoke to her, her grip tightening in his shirt. Slowly, she lifted her head and looked at him. Instead of ruby red orbs staring at them, they were a shade of deep sapphire blue. "Good..." she said quietly in a shaky voice. "Don't... Don't ever do that again... Not alone... I know I wasn't a good friend before, especially after leaving like I did.." She closed her eyes, taking a deep breath. "Why did you do it..?"

"I thought since...you didn't want to be my friend that....I had no purpose..." he told her as he slowly gained his strength back. "And...since I didn't have a purpose...what was the point in living? I wasn't going to kill myself, I was going to let someone else do it for me...". He sighed looking up at her with tired, golden eyes. "I....won't ever do it again...I promise..." he swore. His gaze scanned the blank room, how gloomy it was. "Could we...leave now? This place is...creeping me out..." he said managing a soft laugh, "Plus all this blood it's...starting to itch...it's very uncomfortable." Shade's lips curled in a small smile, "So we're...friends again, right?".

Maia kept her eyes closed as tears welled up again at his confession. So it was me who made him do this... I really am stupid... she thought, turning her face into his shirt. When he suggested they leave, she nodded and stood, turning toward the door. "Y'know.. we never stopped being friends, really. I just left because I thought I would only make things worse if I had stayed," she told him, fidgeting with her fingers as she stared at the floor. She shook her head and moved back to Shade, helping him when he needed it. "Let's get you back to your room..."

[Shade shook his head, "No leaving only makes things worse, so please don't leave..." he told her still smiling. He used the strength he had gotten back to stand. True, he was still very weak and needed rest, but he could make it to his room. "Come on, let's go."
